Ways Of Maintaining Safe Prisoner Transport Systems

By Francis Riggs

Prison escapes have been happening from time to time. In most cases this is usually because of poor transportation systems for the prisoners. There are very many reasons that make it necessary for prisoners to be moved from one location to another from time to time and therefore this process can never be avoided no matter how dangerous it is. However, there are some measures that can be taken in prisoner transport systems to ensure utmost safety during this process and also to prevent escapes.

Escapes during the transportation process are usually not an accident. These situations take place if some precautionary measures are ignored. Some officers may think that handcuffs are enough to ensure safety which is never the case. They must always be extra careful because it is their lives that will be in danger. These are examples of tips they can use.

Using handcuffs only is not advisable when transporting the prisoners. Other things that could be considered are the leg chains and belly chains. These chains should be made of very strong metallic material that the inmates cannot break even if they tried. To make sure they are strong enough, the chains must be supplied by a reliable company.

Unlike the handcuffs, the leg and belly chains also help to restrict the movement of the prisoners. With these extra protections, the prisoner will not be able to move from one point to another to try and hurt the officers in charge of these transportation. These chains are usually attached to the prison van so that the wardens are unable to break free. They must also be attached as far away from the warden as possible.

Convicts also require to be transported around in special cars with enhanced safety. Special features are normally added to these cars to make them even surer. For example, they ought to have satellite GPS devices to constantly know the area that the vehicle is in. In case the prisoners manage to escape, it will be much easier to know their location if these devices are fitted.

In addition to the satellite devices, there are other devices that can be installed on the vehicles to further improve the security. For example, there must be very strong window and door metal protection that is not easy to break. If these vehicles are like the normal ones with just glass windows, the prisoners will not even need extra effort to break through them.

Preventing prison breaks should not be the only aim of these transport systems. They can also be able to make sure that the wardens in charge are not in danger. There should be different compartments in the vehicle so that the wardens and the prisoners are separated. Weapons must also be stored very safely so that the convicts cannot get to them.

Prison transportation is necessary but at the same time very risky. Extra security must therefore be enforced to prevent discrepancies in the process. Thorough searching should be done before the journey begins so that no dangerous objects are carried to the trip. These and other precautions must always be taken every time prisoners are being moved regardless of the distance.
