Understanding The Fire Protection Services

By Edna Booker

A fire accident is the most dangerous and risky of all accidents. It could cause destruction of property worth millions, it could cause mass loss of lives and most scary of all, it spreads fast over flammable materials. Due to the threat that is paused by this risk, fire protection services are put in place to help people manage the situation when it occurs. These services are systems set in place to prevent the blaze and stop it before it causes damage to property. It also has guidelines that are followed to avoid panic among the people that could result in casualties.

There are three major levels of safety. The first one is passive protection. These are basically preventative measures that are put up to handle safety in buildings. This is implemented by using less flammable materials during the construction of a building. This means that the fire will take a very long time to move to other parts of the building.

Another form of passive safety is spray fireproofing. This is application of fireproof liquids on the surfaces of structures to protect them from destruction by the blaze. Endothermic pains are used to this effect. By doing this you can prevent the blaze from getting to electrical circuits or gas pipes that may cause it to grow bigger.

Use of firewalls in another form of passive protection. The work of a firewall is to sub-divide different partitions in the building in order to prevent the movement from one partition to the next. This can also be used to act as a border between two buildings to avoid the risk of blaze spreading from one to the other. The idea here is to have the blaze in a containable section where it can be put out easily without affecting the rest of the building.

Active protection is the other level of safety. These are measures that are out in place to contain the blaze should it start. They are always active in most buildings are started as a response the occurrence of a blaze. An example of such a system is a blaze detection unit. This system has sensors that detect smoke and temperature levels. When the levels get to a specified limit, they are classified as a fire then an alarm is raised to warn people.

Another example of active protection is the use of water sprinkler systems. These systems are used to help reduce the growth of a fire which increases the safety in the building. They do this by use of sensors that detect the presence of a blaze and then set the sprinkler off in any area where the blaze has been detected. They are connected to a water source at all times and this makes them a very reliable safety measure.

Education is very important. The health and safety of all people in case of any blaze depends largely on how they respond to the alert. In most places there are signs put up containing instructions that should be followed in case of a blaze.

Finally, safety comes down to your individual awareness of the risk of fire in your space. This means that you should participate in drills and campaign to make your office or apartment building safer for you.
