By Margaret Ross

Having borderline personality disorder can be incredibly frustrating, and when it is severe it can even lead to thoughts of suicide. A person like this will suffer from anxiety, depression and other related emotions. Probably the most serious aspect is their inability to control their emotions. This is obviously a big problem. Fortunately, there is BPD therapy Ontario available.

However, not all of these methods are successful. For example, an individual can spend forever talking about what has happened from one week to the next, but this often doesn't help them. It is the practical help that will guide them through the difficult stages in their lives. Dialectical behavioural therapy is said to be the most well recognized type of therapy for patients who are suffering in this way.

This type of therapy is based on cognitive behaviour therapy, whereby the patient will begin to eliminate negative emotions and self talk. This is replaced by a more positive state of mind. Besides the cognitive therapy, DBT also consists of being mindful, which is the major success factor. Patients will also engage in a routine which is healthy, leading to goals that are realistic.

It can be a long process and the therapist could have to begin by talking about their past before looking at any alternative treatments. Dialectical behaviour therapy is something that has been successfully used for borderline personality patients over the last couple of decades. It helps the patient become more positive and eliminate any negative self talk.

People with the disorder often have other disorders as well, such as depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and eating disorders. These are things that DBT can be helpful with. Over the years, this method was reserved purely for people who suffered from the disorder. However, now it is for people who have addictions or for people who are battling with thoughts of suicide.

They have simply adopted the practice of that of Buddhism to some degree, which helps the patient to remain calm and stay focused on the present, rather than getting distracted which leads to emotions that can become uncontrolled. Patients learn the skills over the course of these sessions, which usually lasts from six months to a year.

They may be do something practical in therapy such as role play. They learn how to express themselves in a more rational way. This can come in the form of communicating with someone in the workplace, for example without raising the voice or getting into a challenging situation where conflict builds up.

It is effective for patients to have one on one coaching. But they will also benefit by having therapy within a group. It can be helpful to understand that there are others who are suffering with the same disorder. It is also more affordable and some to think about when one can't afford individual therapy. Phone coaching exists as well. This is good for extra support when one finds that they are in a bad situation. It is not wise to use this method solely because you need contact on a social basis. But you can do more of this therapy because it is also affordable.
